The writing on the wall

I mentioned back in October or so that I went to a home party for a company called Uppercase Living. Uppercase Living is a company that makes vinyl lettering that you can put on your walls, wood, mirrors, windows, cars...basically any flat surface. I have worked with vinyl lettering before and one of the best parts about it is the absolute ease of application. The letters are really reasonably priced and look really cool on walls.

I ordered two different phrases--one for the living room and one for Maren's room. I received them back in November but only just got around to actually putting one up. I chose the one in Maren's room, and followed the directions provided to me (even though I knew how to do it, having used vinyl lettering before). I have to say that I was terribly disappointed by the difficulty I had in putting the Uppercase Living lettering on my wall.

The way the lettering works is that there are three layers: bottom layer is the backing sheet, middle layer is the cut vinyl words which are adhesive on the back, and the top layer is also adhesive and sticks the whole thing together. To apply it, you peel off the backing layer, stick the rest of it to your wall (or whatever surface you're using) and use something like a credit card or Pampered Chef scraper to burnish the lettering onto the wall.

Well, I burnished right through the top layer of paper in a few places, and all they way through the vinyl in two others! :( The problem was that the adhesive on the top layer was far stickier than the adhesive on the back of the vinyl, so the vinyl could not separate from the top layer and stick to the wall. I have worked with vinyl from two other sources previous to this, and I've never had that problem before. I don't know if the adhesive somehow got stickier while it was languishing for two months on my desk, but I do know that I probably won't be ordering from Uppercase Living again. I want to order a long quote to go over a doorway in my house, but I'm glad I waited--I would have been tearing my hair out trying to apply it and probably would have ended up calling the consultant and asking for a refund.

Anyway, if you don' t look too close it turned out pretty cute. The print in the middle is vintage and was purchased at an antique store for Maren by my grandma. The little porcelain cherubs are a new addition and I think they may have belonged to my great-grandmother. The whole thing hangs over Maren's crib and I'm hoping that she doesn't figure out how to climb out of it anytime soon! I know it's just a matter of time but I'm crossing my fingers for a little longer...I don't know what we'll do when she isn't confined at night! Shudder.

  1. It looks great from here! I can totally understand how frustrating the process must have been.

  2. There has to be another company that makes something like that. It isn't so bad when they are out of the crib actually. BUT, Jack sleeps with his door closed anyway, and always has, so he is still sort of confined.

  3. Well it looks wonderful even if it was a pain to apply! I know what you mean about the wall above the crib. I've got a grabby monkey girl, so there is a big blank wall where her crib rests.

It looks adorable and I love the print. That's a shame about the stinky lettering, I would write the company.

I just noticed your post about the lettering. I am actually a consultant for Uppercase Living. There are some techniques for textured walls (like yours & mine) that really make a difference in the application process. Give us one more chance!

I am sorry you had a hard time applying the lettering. Uppercase Living is just a baby company and they are just getting started. I am also a conultant and they are trying new ideas all the time. Like the person above me said, give us one more chance!

Uppercase Living has been a fabulous product from my experience. I have several on my wall and they all have gone up so easy. There are some very easy tips to make it transfer well. Ask your consultant for their advice. It could be a dirty wall or simply the angle you are using to peel back the lettering.

Wow, I find that hard to beleive. I have purchased Uppercase Living product in the past and it was really easy to apply. I bought a really long one too. It was the quote about something from heaven. I put it in my baby's room. I agree with the other comment left about the wall maybe dirty or the angle used to peel the paper off. Also, using the "hinge" process made a HUGE difference for me in the ease of application.

I am a sign company that makes wall stickers and sometimes you will have a harder time if your wall has any texture or dusty. My walls are plaster and it is a bit tricky to get them on. Any questions or if you would like to try our product,E-mail me at jtlewin@gmail.com.

I attended a party and thought WOW this looks easy - buyer beware! I ordered the LARGEST size font available using the letter of my last name only to find out when it arrived I DIDNT HAVE THE APPROPRIATE ARROWS ON THE THING TO ENSURE ACCURACY! The letter was going in a peak of a large room where the pitch of my roof comes together so it was highly visable space. It had to be eye-balled by someone on the floor - I was a nervous wreck! When I made an inquiry to the Uppercase living rep, I merely got a general response email back from the company, NOT SIGNED ofcourse stating that not ALL embellishments come with arrows - NICE TO KNOW NOW - NOW THAT YOU HAVE MY MONEY! Anyway, life goes on - I will stick stenciling, something that I am comfortable with.

I am also an Uppercase Living Consultant. If you barely dampen a rag and then wipe the top of the embellishment it will let go easier.

  17. I'm a demonstrator myself. Uppercase Living has a 90 day exchange policy (no returns). They would replace the item for the same exact item for absolutely free (great for the consumer who had a hard time getting it up!) or for the cost of shipping (usually $4.95 for an individual order) you could replace the item for a different item and just pay the price difference if there is one. I'm sorry to hear that you had trouble with it. I give my customers great support! Demo. ID: 363000 Token: Scott

  18. I have a site called The Vinyl Lady and from what i've heard (from an actual demonstrator for UL) I am waay cheaper and better quality. She actually ordered from me, if you are wanting a large quote I would check me out my web address is www.thevinyllady.com! I hope your not completely turned off to vinyl, I love it and not everyone out there is a big company that is too busy for the little guy!

UL 100% guarantees our product and it sounds like you got a bad batch of adhesive. It happens but is definitely not the norm. I have hung hundreds (I am a demonstrator & do installations) and I have never had the same problem. I did notice some problems with adhesive in Nov/Dec of last year. I think our order volume was so high (record breaking) that the processing dept. was trying to get orders out as fast as possible and orders were not checked as thoroughly. All those problems have been corrected. I urge you to try it again. I have tried a couple different vinyl companies and ours was far superior. If you order a product and have trouble you have 90 days to let us know and we'll send a replacement. If you need anything in the future please let me know and I'll make sure you're happy with your purchase. My email is inspirationalwalls@comcast.net

  20. I Googled "problems with Uppercase Living" because I am having trouble with my application, too. I bought medium size initial on the round circle swirls to put on my shower door. My shower door is perfectly smooth, so my issue is not the texture of the wall. I have been burnishing and burnishing and burnishing the darned thing on BOTH sides. It will not completely separate from the backing paper. As carefully as I have tried, the smaller points of the swirls are stuck to the backing paper and the other parts of the design are becoming stretched and torn because of the pull from the backing paper and the adhesive side. I keep taking the design down to reburnish it but now that one of the inner circles is stretched out of shape I am going to give up. I personally think this is expensive for something that does not work.

    Talk about frustrating!

Thanks for posting this on your blog. I'm off to see if there are other blogs, posts, places, and/or people who have had trouble and maybe someone has an answer. I'm not thrilled about having to wait for the company to go through its paperwork and shipping to get this replaced.

Does anyone have the # to the company? After I spent $100.00 the consultant pretty much told me too bad.. that I had problems. As I was putting my saying on the wall. It got stuck together and ruined it. I was very displeased since it was 30 buck..

I had the exact same problem putting up my letters. I would not buy from them again and will make sure to let other people know not to as well.

Upper case living letters are terrible. the letters are more adhesive to the sheet that it being peeled away than the one that is supposed to go against the wall. The video on the UL web site made it look WAY too easy. I never did get the letters transferred since the sheet was starting to shred since I was pushing so hard trying to get the letters to transfer. Was it because I waited several months after purchasing before tying to apply???
