Defying Gravity

We're headed to the thea-tah tonight! We're going to see "Wicked" for the second time, and we're excited. It first came here to Denver in September 2005 and we were able to see it then, even though the run was nearly sold out. As soon as that run was over they announced the current dates (for a year and a half later!) and those tickets nearly sold out as well! We have some friends who do a deal with the theater and are able to get really great seats for a great price. We've got tickets to see the premiere of "The Little Mermaid" this summer and hope to get tickets to "Spamalot" when it comes later this year as well.

I love plays and musical theater and have been fortunate to be able to see quite a few great shows. I have seen:
The Phantom of the Opera (3 times, once in San Fran and twice in Salt Lake)
Les Miserables (twice, once in Salt Lake and once in London)
Wicked (will be twice after tonight, both in Denver)
Cats (London)
Starlight Express (London)
Miss Saigon (London)
Tommy (Salt Lake)
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (with Donny Osmond in Salt Lake)
Chess (small regional production)
The Drowsy Chaperone (NYC)
The Lion King (NYC)
Hairspray (NYC)
Beauty and the Beast (Salt Lake)
The King and I (Salt Lake)
Annie (London)
Amadeus (London)
Arcadia (Salt Lake)
Peter Pan (we thought it was a musical but it was just a play--drag! London)
Little Women (Salt Lake)
several Shakespeare plays (London)
I'd love to see: Grey Gardens; Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk; Mary Poppins; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; The Light in the Piazza; Nunsense; The Secret Garden; Thoroughly Modern Millie; and many more!

I think out of all of those, my favorites have been The Drowsy Chaperone, Wicked and Phantom. I didn't like Little Women, Cats or Arcadia. I'd love to see a large-scale production of Chess but I doubt it will ever happen. What shows have you seen? What is your favorite? What would you like to see?

Rick and I would love to see Spamalot. When it came to Cleveland we balked at the price. Was it as funny as advertised?

I was disapointed with Cats too.

  2. I saw both Chicago and Rent in London, and they were both awesome. Other than that, I haven't been to the theater in many years.

  4. Coincidence! We're going to the theater on Friday, too. Something Shakespeare at the Goodman. Chicago has such great theater!

I don't know if I could remember all the plays I've seen. That's cool you're keeping track. I do hope to see Wicked this summer. I refuse to pay big bucks for these big shows, though.

  6. Unless I count the 4th grade Musical last Christmas, I am out on this one! You are so lucky to have seen all those fabulous plays. Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of our very favorites - we watch the DVD with Donny all the time. Well, not with Donny, but the one with him in it! ;o) I would love to see that in person. We have a performing Arts Center that sees a lot of Broadway productions - the Speling Bee is coming next - but tickets are in the hundreds of $$$'s. Ouch.

  7. I am so very very jealous that you got to see the Drowsy Chaperone. It's one of my favorites to listen to. The list of things I've seen is long, though not as long as yours. Drowsy Chaperone is the one show I would have LOVED to see the original cast of. . . Was Wicked as good this time around?

  9. I'm afraid I might take up all your bandwidth on my list,Wicked is my alltime fave sittin' in the audience show, and I was lucky enough to see it with Idina ! I hope you someday can see Light in the Piazza,it is truly a classic!
Last summer my oldest baby played Jellylorum in Cats. She was directed by a wonderful actress who had played the same role ON Broadway, and toured with the show many years, the kids all did the original choreography, and it was quite dazzling, for a group so young(or any age),I had NEVER seen it until her involvement.
My favorite role I have played, was Mrs Walker in Tommy. We were nominated and won all kinds of critics awards for the show, including best musical.
I actually really like Arcadia,I saw a great regional theatre interpretation of it,and everything worked so well, casting, set, size of the theatre, direction, etc.,but I can see how a poor(or too large) production might be confusing,or just plain bad.
