Since then, I've been on the never ending, voracious hunt for Shiny Brites. In my experience they've been hard to find so my collection is still small, but one look at the zillions of Shiny Brites for sale on eBay tell me that they're still out there, waiting to be found. The difference is that I wouldn't dream of selling them! I still have mostly plain glass balls but slowly I've been finding more and more of the 'special' ones--those that have stripes or glitter or are a different shape. When I find those at a garage sale or thrift, I don't think I could be more excited if they were diamonds and rubies! They are truly treasures to me.
All of the thrifts around here wait until after Halloween to put their Christmas donations out for sale, so I have to wait to search. Ever since I got home from Silver Bella I've been on a bit of a thrift bender, and I've been lucky in the vintage Christmas department! These were all in one big bag. All of my local thrifts just throw a bunch of stuff in a bag and price it, a dangerous situation for delicate glass balls. Sometimes I get very lucky and find a whole bag full of good stuff like this, but mostly it's a whole bag of crap and one or two good things. Not all of these are Shiny Brites but they are all vintage. I especially love the small boxes of feather tree ornaments.
For me, the graphics on the old ornament boxes are just as appealing as the contents! The ornaments inside this box are nothing special, but the box is great! The dipsticks at the thrift store had crisscrossed the top with clear packing tape and I took a chance, hoping I could use some Un-Du and get the tape off without completely destroying the box. I was mostly successful, but you can see on the edges where the red paper lifted off despite the care I took. Oh well, it's still great and once I glue down that errant flap and fill it with "good" ornaments, it will look great!
More wonderful old graphics! I don't know how, but I very nearly overlooked these at the thrift store. They should have jumped right out at me, as different as they are from all the modern boxes of ornaments they were stacked with. Thankfully, I looked again and snatched them up as fast as I could! Good thing, because there were treasures inside:
If you want to really drool, search "Shiny Brite" on eBay and look through just a few of the 1400 listings that come up. Whoa, nelly. I used to think that buying off eBay was cheating, but knowing how hard it has been to find the few ornaments that I do have, mostly one and two at a time, eBay is starting to look a lot more appealing. If I had lots and lots of money, I think I'd be bidding just as fast as my fingers could click the mouse. Chasing the Shiny Brite dragon. Yikes.
This year I have enough of the special ornaments to decorate my tree, and I'm so excited to get everything out and see how it looks! I'm a little nervous about the potentially catastrophic combination of fragile glass ornaments + curious toddler hands but I'm going to risk it. I can always buy more on eBay, right?
What a delicious post !!! The pictures are so drool-able! Shiny brites are not necessarily my X-mas crack but vintage X-mas in general are. I must put the qui-ee-tus on my habit this year!
ReplyDeleteWow! Lucky you. I have been looking and looking thinking the good Christmas stuff should be out by now, but I have been coming up totally empty handed at the thrifts for a few months now. Not even a tablecloth to be had.
ReplyDeleteI think I probably told you this last year, but the best way to protect the stuff on the tree is to 1) screw the tree down to something heavy like a table or a big wood packing crate (this has the added bonus of elevating the tree) and 2) wire those puppies onto the branches, don't just hang them there. (And option 3: make horribly loud shrieking noises whenever the cat/dog/kid dares to go near the thing. LOL)
As soon as I get the big tree up this week, I will show some pictures on the blog of how I try to "life proof" my trees.
Ohh, these are really beautiful bulbs. I have a small collect myself that were my grandparents and great aunt's. I too am an avid thrifter and antique shopper...one can never have enough.
ReplyDeleteI don't see an email address so I can send you the information you requested. If you send me an email I will send it to you. You can reach me at designerm at hotmail dot com
Thanks for stopping by! :)
I love Shiny Brite ornaments too and get sooo excited when I find them at sales or thrifts! ESPECIALLY when I find them cheap! *lol* Thanks for posting your photos!

Wow! Great score!
ReplyDeleteI am using a load of shiny brites for my seasonal display (about 30 or so). I purchased them all at a rummage sale for less than $1 - most is original boxes. You know me and my fickle nature - nothing stays around here too long. So after the holidays, they are yours!!
Those ornaments are wonderful! Just like candy!
ReplyDeleteDelightful! Did you see the John & Kate + 8 where they had the huge baby gate around their tree? Might be worth it just for another year.
ReplyDeleteGirl I'm with you! One of my favorite finds of last year was at a little thrift shop that is a bit too far for me to visit on a regular basis. They had a HUGE tub of glass and plastic ornaments marked 10 for $1. I found exactly 10 Shiny Brites! And most are the striped/decorated kind. :) I keep them in a clear jar on the side bar. I love them! Now tonight I will go home and inspect each and everyone again after reading your post.
ReplyDeleteI'm heading off to the thrift store again this weekend. Will I get as lucky? Doubtful but we'll see. (That's the same store where I found the Vera Christmas table cloth i sent you last year! Wish me luck!)
hugs
Wow. You are so lucky!!! I just got on the 'vintage' bandwagon this year, and you are right. It is a serious competition to find these things at thrift/antique places. You have a great collection. I strongly believe there is no shame in ebay, not for the truly devoted collectors! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I always cheat with eBay. My thift stores usually have nothing. Your boxes are wonderful! I love the packaging more than the contents most of the time.
ReplyDeleteMy heart was pitter-pattering just reading about your ornaments. I have the same addiction! I only started collecting them about two years ago. I'm not sure if any are shiny brite or not. I just love vintage ornaments, in general.
ReplyDeleteFor several years now, I've wanted to craft a shorter version of a garden gate to surround my tree, to keep the kids at bay. I haven't done so yet, but you're creative. Maybe you can come up with some sort of cute gate that might keep your little lady at a somewhat safe distance... ;)
To keep my tree from toppling, I usually twist a really heavy duty gauge fishing line around it (near the mid-to-top section of the tree) and tie the ends to small nails (that I'd already pounded into the wall). Well, there's my two cents for the day! Lol!
Wow, I remember those bulbs from when I was a kid. I only came to appreciate their real beauty after I became an adult. I've seen reproduction ones in the stores a few times, but they aren't the same as the real deal!
ReplyDeleteO, and keep up with the posting about Silver Bella. For those of us who didn't get to attend, we live vicariously thru reading of your adventures there! :)
