Blogger help needed!

I need some Blogger help! When I look at my blog, I see a skinny bit of text in the middle, a sidebar, and then TONS of blank space on either side. It's driving me nuts! I'm all for a little white space to rest your eyes, but this is ridiculous. Can anyone help me with any of these issues?
  • How do I stretch out my text column to make it wider? I'm pretty sure there's a way to do this, I just have NO IDEA how to fix it.
  • How do I alter the size of my sidebar? I hate that my swap buttons are HUGE but I know it's because all items in the sidebar are the same width.
  • Is there a way I can add a sidebar to both sides of my main text, like you see on Typepad blogs? I checked out the templates Blogger supplies but none of them have sidebars on both sides.
If any of you know the answers to my questions and can explain them to me slowly and patiently like I am a 4-year-old (HTML is not my friend), I would be very appreciative!

In other news, I went to Target this morning to see if there was any Christmas stuff left at 90% off. I was really good this year and did almost no after-Christmas shopping, but curiosity finally got the better of me. All of the Christmas stuff was gone, packed away to make room for the Global Bazaar line. Oh well! The Making Memories Christmas line from the scrapbooking aisle was still ringing up full price--I got some neat things 90% after Halloween, so I expected the Christmas stuff to be marked down too. Not that I needed anything but I love their designs and for 90% off, it's worth trying to find a place in the storage closet for it until next year. How annoying.

I did, however, find TONS of toys marked 75% off! I don't know how long that deal has been going but there were still several aisles quite full of good toys. Most of the stuff was for older kids and Maren already has more toys than she knows what to do with, but I picked up a few fun games for us (Totally 80's Trivial Pursuit, Harry Potter 2 Scene It, 1 vs. 100) and a few small toys to stash in the closet for birthday presents. I also went to JoAnn's, where I was surprised to see that all of the Easter decor is out already! Easter is early this year (March 23) but still, this seems awfully early. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised--after all, Target had Valentine stuff out well before Christmas. I will admit that I am terribly excited to pull my Easter decorations out this year! I loved them so much last year, and was sad to put them away. I'm eager to see my pretties again.

While the snow falls and Maren sleeps, I'm going to go get all the Christmas junk put away ONCE AND FOR ALL. It made it down to the basement, but it's all still in a pile at the base of the stairs and it's driving me nuts!

I know where that 90% off Target Christmas stuff went!!! It was all shipped to my Target and I was there when they opened box after box. It was unbelievable. I doubt I shall ever live to catch that kind of timing again, but I am so happy to have experienced it once!

  2. Hmmm, I have about 2 inches on each side on my screen on my own blog. On yours its about 2.5 inches. And your header is overriding the box at the moment.

I think the problem is that because your blog is old, as is mine, that we are using old templates and not new ones. I asked the guy at Blogatech and he said I would have to upgrade my template to make those kinds of changes, but frankly, I am too scared to do that until I get my blog printed. I don't want to risk a massive loss. But, maybe you aren't as chicken as I am? You can do that by clicking on customize design on your template.

Other than that, if you click on EDIT HTML on your template page there are a lot of places that say "margin". You could mess with those numbers, but I have no clue what will happen if you do. If you decide to do that, You should cut and paste a copy of your current template into a word doc BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANYTHING so that you have something to revert to.

Also, you can try asking at Blogatech or at the blogger forums.

Or you can email me, and I will see if I can help anymore than that.

  3. Hi! I have the same amount of space on my blog. Although I am new to this stuff...I think it is the type of layout you picked. Some of them have different versions within the same layout and you have to pick under templates "Pick new template" ...then you will see all the different templates. The first one is called "Minima" which is the one I have. Below it is one called "Minima Lefty" or "Minima stretch" or "Minima Lefty Stretch". It makes the blog bigger but I couldn't use it with the Cheesy graphic that I made for myself! Try this and see if it works?????

    Hope this helps.

PS> I wish I had seen the 90 percent off stuff at Target that Jane snagged!

  4. I wish I could help ya but I am so not tech savvy. I'm lucky I can post on my blog let alone tweak it. Actually the only reason I can tweak anything is because Sarah helped me and "Miz Smoochie Lips" redid my header codes for me!

  5. Hi,
Since your using blogspot, they have several template choices on your editing page that are "STRETCH" and I've found those work well for more info in less space. I hope that helpls a little.

I wish I could help you but I can't even get a banner up on my blog and I would love to have one.
I guess I am going to have to break down and buy one eventually since I am not computer savvy enough to do one myself.
Your blog looks nice, the buttons are just a bit bigger than normal.
    Very Good I talk? lol
I have no idea on that one either.

  7. One thing about the blogger header. If you use MGI PhotoSuite, open your header photo, then click on Image and then on Convert to Web Format. I use 640 x 480. Save that and then put that saved header back on your blog. It will shrink it to fit the top of your blog and not go over the side. That might also help with the sidebars being stretched. But, I am not sure.

I use http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/blogheader.php to format my headers, then just copy and paste it into formating section. I do not mess with HTML codes. Not me!

  8. I the same problem. I tried some templates, but ended up having to redo all my colors ect...
So, I gave up. I can understand why people love Typepad so much, but I'm too lazy to give up my blogger address.

Falling snow and a sleeping little girl; that sounds so peaceful! Hope you had success getting your stuff cleared away. My Xmas stuff was in the hallway under the attic door forever, hauling it up took forever.

  9. I saw the toys at Target yesterday and am heading back today sans munchkins. My son's bday is in two months so I'll stock up for that. Gifts is a good idea, too.

    Cheers! LA

  10. My blog is the same way and I'm thinkin' it has something to do with the templates blogger uses. Now I've lost the ability to add new things in the column! Grrrr! Ah the trials of the wonderful world of blogging! : ) Good luck!
