If you're not familiar with Dover Publications, now is the time to get acquainted. I've long loved Dover books--I used to buy the little books of paper dolls at an art store near my home and my college bookstore sold Dover Thrift Editions for a mere $1.00, which enabled me to buy myself a tidy little stack of the classics and poetry. One of the things Dover is best known for is its vast collection of permission-free clip art. A couple of years ago my mom gave me this book & CD-ROM for Christmas. I've loved it! There are beautiful Victorian-style graphics taken from postcards and greeting cards for nearly every holiday. I've used them frequently on my blog and have also printed them out to use in various craft projects. I recently ordered this book, which has illustrations that are more 1920s-30s in style. I like it quite a bit, but I still love the Holiday Vignettes book better.
If you want to get a taste of what Dover has to offer, both clip-art and other items, you can sign up for their weekly Sampler newsletter here. Every Friday you get a newsletter with links to all kinds of samples of featured products. Some are clip-art, some are coloring pages, mazes, games, illustrations, and much more. To save the images to your computer, just right-click and choose a folder. There is also a weekly e-card you can send that is usually a cute vintage illustration. I've really enjoyed getting them each week in my inbox and have amassed quite a few pieces of clip art in the process.
We're all still sick at my house. Maren has finally succumbed after toughing it out for almost two weeks now. She's a tough little girl, and her personality changes quite drastically when she's not feeling well. I had a rough morning today (no more codeine-laced cough-syrup for me, thankyouverymuch) but I'm actually feeling better right now so I hope it means I'm on the mend. Back tomorrow!
I'm so glad you posted this! I've often wondered where everyone finds all of this cute vintage clip art. Now I know where to start anyway. :) I signed up for the newsletter!
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys start feeling better soon!
Thanks for the good tips on the clip art! I can tell I'm going to need to refuel my printer cartridge soon!
ReplyDeleteGood challenge, I've been averaging about 11 or 12 posts a month-maybe I can shoot for a few more this month. I'll spare the toe juice posts as well..LOL
I sugned up for my Newsletter when you sent me the iinfo earlier in the week. I looked at the books and OH MY. I could go broke over there. I want/need/lust for all of them! The fruit crate lable look is calling to me as I have a collection of vintage fruit crate labels.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better very soon. And Maren too. I am allergic to codeine - can you believe some people actually LIKE that feeling of loopiness????? Not, I.
Good luck with your blog challenge! Not an easy task! : ) While the top 10 breakfast foods might be a fun blog...please, please, no toe finds!! lol* Take care!

My Little Petal went to the ER on X-mas day, from a particularly horrific stomach bug, which my oldest babe and I succumbed right after. Thank god the theatre was dark,ah well back to the saltmines er,boards, tonite!
ReplyDeleteI was a terrible blogger in Dec too and as part of my New Years Resolutions, I said I would blog at least 3 times a week I couldn't commit to posting every day, I would have a serious lack of fun things to post:) So fun that you got to meet a blog friend! Every time I pick up a box of shiny brites at an estate sale, I think of you and your love of them! Happy New Year! Cheers to being more consistent bloggers!
ReplyDeletewho can keep up in December?
ReplyDeleteWhat are you going to do? Turn to the loved ones all gathered round and say"so sorry dahrlings, talk amongst yourselves..I simply must blog."
Or "I didn't have time to wrap your gift lovee.. But I did post 3 times a week. And I did it in your honor!"
But congratulations on your recommitment looking forward to all the prettiness.
