Basket-itis spreads AND baby shower menu help needed!

Picnic-Basket-itis seems to be catching! Look what I found this morning when we stopped off at a garage sale on the way to the commissary:
This red basket was $5.00. It looks to be a little newer than the one I bought yesterday but I can't really tell. It does have metal handles where the others are wood. I do love how they look stacked on top of each other!

I cannot keep buying these big huge baskets! So no more, really. Okay, maybe if I see another, I'll let myself buy just one more. But that's it! I mean it!

I am co-hosting a baby shower next Saturday and I need some help with the menu, so I hope you all can give me some suggestions! It is a brunch, held from 10:30 to noon. I know that in some places in the country, showers are frequently held in restaurants and such but in my culture, baby showers are pretty informal affairs. It will be here at my house and I think there have been about 40 invited, but I doubt we'll have that many attend. We're not doing games or anything, just visiting and watching the guest of honor open gifts. The food is just buffet style.

The other co-host has volunteered to make cinnamon rolls, chocolate cupcakes, and bread pudding--they are all specialties of hers. You can see we're heavy on the sweet/carb side of things, so I need to balance that out with what I make. I was thinking something savory, like a breakfast egg casserole? Also a fruit plate or a veggie plate might be a good idea. Do I need something else, like little chicken salad croissants? I need to get it planned out now because I have a lot going on next week and so my time will be limited. I'd love any suggestions and/or recipes you'd like to send my way!

  1. I have a breakfast casserole that I make every Christmas morning. It has eggs, sausage, grits and an obscene amount of cheddar cheese. We love it! I'd be happy to share the recipe.

Quiche might also me a good choice--you could do several offerings. That way you'd have a variety of meats or veggies, depending on your crowd.

What about those little quiches from Costco? Also, I would serve orange or berry julius fresh from the blender as a drink. Fresh fruit kabobs would be cute too with some kind of fruit dip, yum, I am getting hungry just thinking about it!! I have a good breakfast /egg casserole recipe if you need it too. Good luck! 6. I think all of the suggestions for a breakfast casserole, quiche and fritatta are great. With all the sweets the other host is bringing, you definitely need some savories. Maybe a breakfast casserole, mini croissants and fruit kabobs. I've seen some wonderful "fruit bouquets" online. They look really fancy and are crazy expensive to order, but you could do your own fairly inexpensively.
Here's a link to step-by-step instructions for a fruit bouquet:

I have a really good recipe for crab quiche, if you're interested. It's very mild in flavor, not overly seafood-like. I've been told by those who don't like seafood, that it's good. {But, of course, it's all a matter of opinion.} :)

In my circle, we always have bridal and baby showers in our homes. The one you have planned sounds like ours. The only difference is, we do potluck.

Good luck with the food, you'll think of something!

  9. I have a picnic basket just like your bottom one that my Mother-in-Law gave to me several years ago. I just love it~ it sits under my ironing board in my craft room and holds all my scrap fabric that I think I just might use someday.

  10. You do need one more basket! Then you will have a little sidetable AND a collection. Collections are 3 of anything right? :)

I really love vintage picnic baskets.

For your brunch I think you should make this salad
    Chicken Club Salad

And some sort of really good quiche.

  12. Heidi...it's a sickness I tell you, a sickness! You start with one little picnic basket...then think maybe only one more! One more couldn't hurt anything, could it? Next thing you know you're selling your kid's shoes in order to score just one more picnic basket!!! Run Heidi..run!!! LOL

  13. I say a quiche or mini quiches. And definitely some sort of fruity drink. You could also do several types of crackers with several different toppers(chicken salad, cheese spreads etc)
Oh and I love the baskets!

  14. Mimosas are not a good suggestion for a baby shower, mom to be won't be able to have any due to the alchohol in them - they are great for bridal showers, though!
I would suggest a fruit platter, use whatever is in season in your area. You could have a lot of fun with that one. I think all the showers I've been to have been at someone's home. Have a good time!

  15. I'm organizing a baby shower for my sis in law this week. We are having ours at the church building - there's more space than at my home! Over here our showers are very informal - a few games, open gifts, have food. Before I moved into the ward they didn't have baby showers, but I started the tradition! I'm just having brownies/cupcakes and icecream with various fruit juices to drink as it's on an evening. Keeping it simple :) I'm sure whatever you decide will be just perfect!

And I LOVE the baskets too! I saw a gorgeous one in my local thrift store complete with china ware and cutlery. But it was a little too expensive. I then went back when they had a half price sale, but the china and cutlery was missing! I was so miffed!! Why had they sold them separately! It annoys me when that happens - they belonged together. I'm weird like that :) joanne x

  16. Hello Heidi,

I found your blog thru Linda's at "Reminisce and This and That". It just so happens that we held a brunch baby shower to celebrate her new granddaughter yesterday and I posted a few recipes for brunch foods today for those who were asking.

Feel free to visit http://nanhann.blogspot.com/ for the recipes.

Thinly sliced honeydew melon, cantalope, watermelon, and pineaplle look gorgeous in a trifle dish.(thin wedges layrered) Also, our doughnut shoppes here make ham and cheese croissants...that came to mind for the ease and deliciousness factor, you could warm them, and cut them into halves on a platter. The egg casserole would go well with those too. (I despise eggs and always appreciate something non-eggy at a brunch)Hope it helps. Love, Kristin

  18. I have a great and very easy recipe for asparagus roll ups on my blog from last year. They are a huge hit when served and are good warm and cooled.

  19. You and I think a like (again) I would do a quiche, I have a great EASY recipe and you can serve it hold or cold. Also little chicken salad sandwiches are perfect! I jaz mine up with some craisins and pecans. And I'm a huge fan of punch at showers, it seems so old fashioned and I love using my punch bowl. I like fruit juice with fresh fruit slices and seltzer or gingerale or even Sprite. :)

  21. My fave egg dish is sooo simple!
    Mexican Fudge
    3 beaten eggs
1/4 jar of green salsa(or other fave salsa)
gobs of cheddar on the bottom and top of 9x11-ish baking dish or pie dish.
bake at 350 for half hour
    serve with fave tortilla chips.
Love the baskets! I am swamped here in Dallas!
