Silver Sunday #3

It's Silver Sunday, on the road! I'm blogging from my mom's house in Utah for a few days but I made sure to bring along a photo so I could participate in Gypsy Fish's Silver Sunday #3.
My silver this week is in the form of my great-grandma's sterling silver flatware.
I don't remember much of my great-grandma, as she died when I was very young but I'm thrilled to have her beautiful silverware. I didn't remember to look at the pattern before I left town, and honestly it's not what I would have chosen, but it's still pretty and I love that it's sterling as opposed to silver plated. It matches my wedding china beautifully!
When I was setting the table for Thanksgiving dinner with my silverware and china, it occurred to me what a ridiculous shame it is that I only use my beautiful table settings a few times each year. I've been thinking of designating one night a week when we use my "nice" stuff for dinner--maybe we'll even eat by candlelight, too! My china is dishwasher safe, but I've read conflicting statements as to the safety of putting sterling silver flatware in the dishwasher. I think for now I don't want to risk the dishwasher so I'll have to hand wash, but I only have forks for three people to clean so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Do any of you use sterling silver flatware often, or even everyday? I'd love to hear from you, especially if you can weigh in on the dishwasher debate!

  1. How odd. I have the same china set - palatial platinum. (Ours came from Macy's in 1999.) We were happy to use it last Th'gvg, but it hadn't been used since Christmas 2007 before that. Hope you get to enjoy yours more often.

  2. Love your silver set. A real family treasure. I have my grandma's silver and I feel so privileged to be my generations' care taker of it.
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. You are so fortunate to inherit that beautiful silver. Our silver service was an anniversary present from my husband's company and believe it or not I have never used it. BUT we did dine by candlelight the other night. :) Happy Silver Sunday.

  4. I love that you have your grandmother's china. I have pieces that were my mom's and a special aunt's, whenever we use those pieces, I feel close to both of them.

  5. Beautiful treasure from your great-grandmother...

I, for one, think silver was meant to be used. It stays much cleaner when used often. I try to use it whenever I can. Keeps me from having to polish it so often!

You're right.. you should continue to hand wash it... I wash mine in regular dish soap and then make sure I rinse well and then dry it completely before returning it to it's silver case.

    Enjoy your treasure...

  7. Our treasures are meant to be used and loved and not tucked away in a drawer. I always hand wash my silver. Just in case. I don't know if it would get etched in the dishwasher.

  8. What a beautiful set...you're lucky to have it...I love your idea about a candle lit dinner once a week...I might have to try it...maybe when the 15yr old (who is the only birdy left in the nest) is at work. Not so sure he'd appreciated silver and candlelight..tee hee. Thanks for coming..see you next Sunday!

  9. The flatware has a very pretty pattern! How wonderful that you have it from your grandma! If I had silver flatware I would use it often but I wouldn't put it into the dishwasher. I would be too afraid that it could get ruined, especially the knifes.

    Hugs,

  10. Your silver is very pretty! We just have one set of silverware. My mom bought it for me when I was a baby, its Oneida, but just stainless steel. She also bought me the whole set of Avon Cape Cod dishes. I do wish we got them out once and awhile!

  11. How wonderful that you have inherited your great grandmother's beautiful silver. My motto is to use your good stuff...if you don't, you and your children will have no sweet memories of dining by candlelight using all the best stuff!
