I've been reminded of when my hometown, Salt Lake City, hosted the Winter Games in 2002. I will admit that up until 2002, I wasn't too thrilled at the idea of the whole world showing up and seeing what a good thing we had going, and messing it all up. I thought having the Olympics in SLC would prove to be a BIG mistake.
Boy, was I wrong. The 2002 Olympics were like having the most amazing party ever in your own backyard for two solid weeks! The city was beautiful and as cliche as it sounds, there truly was excitement in the air. I even got to attend a biathlon competition--I don't particularly care about the sport, but at least now I can say I've been to an Olympic event. My big regret is that I wish I could have volunteered. Thousands of citizens volunteered and many had amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I had a full-time job when the call for volunteers went out so I didn't bother to apply. By the time the Olympics actually rolled around, my job was gone and I would have been free to volunteer, but by then it was too late. Rats!
One of the fun things about any Olympics is the pin trading. Hundreds of pins are designed for each Olympics and we had fun searching out those that were funny and significant to us. Compared to the amount available we bought only a teeny handful, but I thought I might share them with you (and my Utah & Mo friends will get a giggle out of them, I'm sure).
The pins are cute. I love the popsicle charm.
ReplyDeleteMy mom gave me a ton of pins for Christmas that year. They are fun. We were already living here and weren't there for the games, but it was so exciting to have them in my home state. I love the fry sauce pin!
ReplyDeleteThat was a really fun post!
ReplyDeleteWe only have a very few pins, our boys were really little and really sick at the time and we were so broke we could barely breathe so we didn't collect a whole lot of anything during the olympics.
We didn't volunteer, we didn't attend on single event. I lived in absolute fear of some kind of terrorist attack since 9-11 was still so fresh in my mind and didn't want to go anywhere near a global target.
We did come out of our shell a little for the para-Olympics which were held right after the regular olympics. We got tickets to the gold medal sledge hockey game through my son's physical therapy school and it was an amazing event! The US team won and it was such a powerful, emotional thing to see MY flag raised over the ice rink and hear MY national anthem. I get choked up just thinking about it!
I also go to attent the para-olympic's opening ceremonies and it was an astounding thing to be a part of.
Once in a lifetime memories to be sure!
Those are all so much fun! Love the Utah foods - Red koolAid and Green Jell-O? I'm in! Although I don't know what Funeral Potatoes or Fry Sauce is.....
ReplyDeleteGreat memories!
OMG, Heidi. What a funny post!
ReplyDeletewow, those are great!!! Ive never seen so many, you def must frame them!!! great post! :) LA
ReplyDeleteLOVE your pins and charms. HH and I both volunteered. I have a few GREAT stories. Two of which are not for public sharing "here". I'll have to tell you over cupcakes some time. Or a lengthy email. We got to drive an olympic Escalade for a month and a half. We thought we were "IT"!
ReplyDeleteToo Fabulous! My girls went to BYU, one is still there. Fry Sauce is a house joke here is AZ! Gotta love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the marshmallow pop idea! That sounds easier than decorating sugar cookies!
ReplyDeleteUh, I'm having an oh-my-goodness moment here. Realizing I may belong in SLC as I prefer my fries in a 50/50 mayo ketchup dip. I never knew there was a name for it!
ReplyDeleteI love those what fun memories!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than fry sauce, so yummy, I miss it. I could leave the green jell-o behind in Utah though. I love the pictures of the baby, so cute.
