Groundhog cupcakes

Friends, it's been a rough week. And it's only Wednesday afternoon.

On Monday morning, Maren had two cavities filled. She was a brave girl--didn't cry one tear and never even needed the nitrous oxide! That afternoon at school she fell during indoor recess (cold kept the kids inside) and hit her head on the wall and landed hard on her wrist, resulting in the dreaded call from the school nurse.

The doc decided it warranted an x-ray, and it turns out she has a buckle fracture in one of her bones. We head to the pediatric orthopedist this afternoon to find out if it needs a cast or can stay in the splint. (sidenote: Maren keeps calling her splint her "sliver." I think she's getting the whole splinter/sliver thing mixed up but it makes me giggle every time.)

Yesterday school was canceled due to ridiculously cold weather. The high temp yesterday was several degrees below zero, and we spent the whole day listening to the heater cycle on and off nearly continuously as it tried to keep up with the cold outside! I went into the basement yesterday morning to put in a load of wash and found that the water in the washer won't come on. We're not sure if it's due to a frozen pipe or just that the washer coincidentally went kaput on the coldest day of the year, but either way we have about two more days of clean undies until I'll be knocking on my neighbor's door with a basket of dirty laundry in hand.

Last night, Porter finally figured out how to climb out of his crib. I know that he's known how to do it since before Christmas, but last night was the first time he actually tried it. Moving him to a toddler bed is not an option for numerous reasons, so we're going to try the crib tent thing for a while.
To get Porter to stay in bed last night we rigged up a 'lid' for his crib out of packing boxes and duct tape. It did the trick and kept him in safely, but then I woke up around 4:30 am this morning, worried that he'd manage to get his head stuck somehow and asphyxiate so I crept downstairs and got scissors and cut all of the tape just in case.

Today school is closed again because of the extreme cold, but I decided we'd go out to the chiropractor (my back/neck are killing me) and to buy a crib tent. I got us all dressed to fend off the -20 degree windchill, strapped everyone in their car seats, and only then found that the car battery is dead. {bangs head against wall}

The bad news is, I fear we haven't faced the worst of it yet. My dear grandmother is fading rather quickly, and I'm afraid that she may not last through the week. Every time the phone rings I'm afraid to look at the caller ID.

Highlight of the past few days has been the Groundhog cupcakes that Maren and I made yesterday.
They're not perfect, but they're still cute! This photo was taken after Porter perpetrated a small Groundhog Massacre so a few of them have wonky faces. I sent them to work with The Mister--I don't care for Almond Joys, so this may be the first time I've ever made cupcakes that I didn't want to go in there and eat them all by myself.

  1. What a trooper! How you were able to manage a post amidst all the chaos of your week (with the cutest groundhog cupcakes to boot) is a triumph! Hope all goes well with your daughter's wrist recovery, and that one day, this post will provide you with a good laugh.

  2. I'm totally laughing with you, not AT you! You poor thing (and Maren, too). I've had days and weeks like this before and it just sucks no matter how you look at it!

Seriously, who's the genius who came up with a basement laundry room?

Please let me know if you need anything.

(p.s. I don't like Almond Joys myself, but those cupcakes are dang cute!! Good for you for finding a bright side to look at. Hang in there!!)

  3. I'm sorry to hear about your Grandmother.

    The cupcakes are adorable.

The crib "lid" - well, now that makes me do a belly laugh! I think using Priority Boxes "other than for their intended use" might be a Federal Crime, but hey - ya gotta do what you gotta do!~ Pure genius if you ask me!

I htink your wish for a better 2011 might not be going so well. :(

  6. What a day! I love Almond Joys so send a few of those my way. And I love that cardboard "lid" you created for the crib. It reminds me a little of the time my 1st baby sat outside the playpen crying while I sat inside the playpen crying -- my hubby was away 5 days of the week at school and I was just "touched" out. (Baby and I eventually made up and she doesn't remember a thing, TG!)

  7. SORRY about your Grandmother - I can relate - we're going through the same 'phone' thing with my M.I.L. right now (who's in the same situation...) It's tough.

The cupcakes made me laugh! What kind of cookie cutter did you use Miss Heidi?? The little Groundhogs looks an awful lot like some penis cutouts(with smiley faces!!) I did for a Bachelorette party a while ago 8-)!! DID YOU DO X-RATED cupcakes for your Kiddos????!

  8. OOPS! I just went and looked at the recipe, now I realize that the GroundHogs are made with Almond Joy candy and NOT with Cut-out cookies.... SORRY, MY BAD!!

  9. My utility room isn't heated so when I went in to do wash last night it was freezing and the water wouldn't turn on either. I had the water set on the coldest setting. I had to turn it up to a warmer setting to get the water to turn on. Try that and see if it works. We have PVC exterior pipes so I know that the pipe coming from outside wasn't frozen. Try turning your water up a notch or two to see if it'll work.

  11. Aw honey...hugs.
I hope you are staying warm and Maren's wrist is not hurting too much.
It is nutzoid in Dallas 4 snow days in a row...unheard of here...course there is a thick layer of ice beneath the 6-7 inches of snow.
Practically a blizzard for us! Face book friends are talking about the baby boom come November...but you and I both know for folks with kids there could not be a BETTER birth control!
I swear... I would have done a similar thing with my youngest to trap her in her crib....she continues to be my pistol!

  13. I was following your Porter crib saga via facebook and had to say I had quite a few belly laughs (sorry, hope you can laugh about it too - if not today than someday. Maren beats me at the dentist...I can't even get my teeth cleaned with out nitrous oxide! I wish you and yours a happy and quiet week.
