Everyone: Hello, Heidi
I love magazines. I always have. I was telling my mom the other day that the reason I haven't picked up a book yet this summer (seriously atypical for me) is because I have a backlog of magazines and I just can't get caught up. In some cases I have more than one issue waiting for me--I can't get the current one read before the next month's shows up in the mail. I don't think she believed me, until I started naming all the magazines that we get in this house.
I subscribe to:
- Country Living
- Scrapbooks, Etc.
- The Ensign (a mag from my church)
- Sunset*
- Conde Nast Traveler*
- ReadyMade*
- Cooking Light
- Entertainment Weekly
- Family Fun
- My Home My Style
- Better Homes & Gardens
In addition to my subscriptions, The Mister gets:
- Sports Illustrated*
- Money*
- Forbes*
- Fortune*
- Triathlete
- Runner's World
- Men's Health
- Men's Fitness
- Backpacker
- Outdoors
- Climbing
And Maren gets:
- The Friend (also from our church)
- National Geographic Little Kids
- Highlights High Five
Good grief, now that I see it all written out it's even worse than I thought. We're drowning in magazines! I keep all of my Country Living issues and the occasional Martha, but otherwise I'm pretty good about reading through my mags, tearing out a few sheets to keep and then tossing the rest in the recycle bin. Another member of this house who shall remain nameless but receives 11 magazines his very own self is not as conscientious about getting rid of his magazines and lets them pile up all over the place, driving his wife crazy. Not naming any names, I'm just sayin'. Ahem.
Add all those magazines to the 160+ blogs that I follow and the catalogs I get in the mail occasionally, and you can see why I haven't cracked a book in months. All of those starred titles were freebies that we got with frequent flyer miles, so we're not actually spending hundreds of dollars per month on magazines. I'm waiting for the subscriptions to run out pretty soon and frankly, I'll be glad when they do because it will mean less clutter around here.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have two past issues of Cooking Light and the latest Family Fun to go through. Gotta go!
I was a magazine junkie too Heidi, but once I discovered blogs back in 2006 and online decorating sites galore I have not subscribed to a magazine since... and don't miss them one bit.
ReplyDeleteIn fact after the flood, I literally threw out hundreds of magazines that I'd been saving for decades!
My addiction to awesome blogs has surely taken over my magazine obsession big-time! :)
Hi Heidi - Hmmmm..... maybe this is a Heidi thing? I should do a post some day and list all of the magazines I USED to subscribe to. I honestly thought at one time (this was years ago) that I may even hold the world's record for highest number of subscriptions by a single (and otherwise seemingly normal) person. I cut WAY back long ago. There are many of which I have saved every single issue, and others that I DO go through and scrap, but not enough, and not often enough. And my saved back issues are not organized neatly on shelves in order or anything like that. Since some of my favorites are no longer published, I don't get as many now, but I also buy one nearly every week when we do our grocery shopping. It's a sickness, truly - magazine addiction. It's real, and it may just run us out of our home some day. But I can't seem to stop.
ReplyDeleteMagazine Junkie: that's me, too.
Like I said, it's a Heidi thing!
Oh - except my husband does it, too. Railroad magazines. Saves every issue.
We have a problem.
I too am a magazine junkie (I even posted about it once). But I only subscribe to one magazine (Canadian Gardening); the rest come from yard sales and thrift stores. I bought 47 older Canadian Gardening and 28 Canadian Home magazines last weekend.
ReplyDeleteBut .......... I also read. I adore reading!
I just found your blog and am laughing to myself because I also save all of my Country Living magazines. That is, until this last week when I gathered up every issue from 1985 till now (a seriously LARGE stack). After tearing out everything I wanted that was still relevant to my life, I only had a small pile of paper left. Then I passed them onto a friend who took what she wanted and we recycled what was left. I also had lots of Martha Stewart Living, Country Home, Victoria, and several different kinds of gardening mags. It is a sickness, I'm sure of it!
ReplyDeleteI'm a reformed magazine junkie. I'm now a yarn addict.
ReplyDeleteI get a lot of magazines, and the Hubs only gets one But it drives me CRAZY to see that one magazine just laying there. GET RID OF IT! (Mine are fine. It's his!)
ReplyDeleteWow. Don't let anyone at my school read this.We have a huge magazine drive in September where we sell about $150,000 in magazines! It's way better than the wrapping paper and overpriced chocolate a lot of schools sell, but needless to say,all of the teachers end up with lots of subscriptions!
ReplyDeleteAs a magazine writer, I'm glad to hear that people still subscribe and read magazines, but my dirty little secret is that I don't like the clutter around the house either, so I do most of my reading online. It runs in our family--my dad has about 40 years of Consumer's Reports in his closet!
ReplyDeleteI like magazines but this is really, really something!!!!
ReplyDeleteHeidi, just discovered your blog and am loving it so far!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a magazine addict, subscribe to a couple of the same ones you do. Unfortunately, I am more like the..ahem..other member of your household in that I do not keep up with them as well as I should. Thank you for the gentle reminder!
Holy magazines! I just subscribed to Family Fun. So great! My only other vice is "Coastal Living". And I just threw out just about all my old ones from the basement.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of "coastal living"... when will we get to see that huge starfish broach?
You're fine. No need for magazine therapy. I admit, I've cut back because I could only read so many (I get about 12, my mom gets about 10 and my grandma gets about 4...and we all swap!). People magazine is my dirty little secret. I don't care how expensive it is, I love it!!!!
